The opinions of men with respect to government are changing fast in all countries. The Revolutions of America and France have thrown a beam of light over the world, which reaches into man/ The enormous expense of governments have provoked people to think, by making them feel; and when once the veil begins to rend, it admits not of repair. Ignorance is of a peculiar nature: once dispelled, it is impossible to re-establish it. It is not originally a thing of itself, but is only the absence of knowledge; and though man may be kept ignorant, he cannot be made ignorant. The mind, in discovering truth, act in the same manner as if it acts through the eye in discovering objects; when once any object has been seen, it is impossible to put the mind back to the same condition it was before it saw it. […] it has never been discovered how to make man unknow his knowledge, or unthink his thoughts.
דעותיהם של בני האדם אודות השלטון משתנות במהרה בכל הארצות. המהפכות באמריקה ובצרפת האירו את העולם בקרן אור, שחודרת עד לב האדם. מחירן הכבד של ממשלות הביא אנשים לידי מחשבה, בכך שגרם להם לחוש. וברגע שהרעלה מתחילה להקרע, לא ניתן לאחותה מחדש. לבורות מאפיין מובהק: ברגע שחלפה, לא ניתן להשיבה. אין לה קיום כשלעצמה, שכן היא רק היעדרותה של דעת. ולמרות שאת האדם ניתן להותיר בבורות, אי אפשר לעשותו נבער. כשהשכל מבין אמת מסויימת, פעולתו זהה לזו כשהעין מגלה עצמים. כאשר עצם מסוים הובחן בשדה הראיה, לא ניתן להשיב את השכל למצב שבו היה לפני כן. […] עדיין לא גילו כיצד לגרום לאדם לשכוח את מה שיודע, או להסיר מדעתו את מה שכבר העלה בראשו.

The rights of men in society, are neither devisable or transferable nor annihilable, but are descendi[a]ble only, and it is not in the power of any generation to intercept finally, and cut off the descent. If the present generation, or any other, are disposed to be slaves, it does not lessen the right of the succeeding generation to be free. Wrongs cannot have a legal descent.
זכויות האדם בחברה, לא ניתנות לחלוקה, העברה או כיליון, אלא רק לירושה, ואין בכוחו של אף דור לקטוע באופן מוחלט את התורשה לדור שאחריו. לו הדור הנוכחי, או כל דור אחר, חפץ בעבדות, אין זה מפחית מזכותם של הדור הבא להיות בני חורין. חטא אינו מועבר בירושה.
